Technology Platforms

To prepare the implementation of the international activities of the HORIZON 2020, it is essential to reinforce strategic EU-SEA partnerships in the ICT area and to add value by jointly addressing important issues. The EU has already invested considerably in creating networks between the key players involved in RDI and has started the process of interconnection of knowledge networks. These European Technology Platforms vary between thematic areas and have different objectives but all of them have internationalization needs and strategies. They bring together stakeholders, led by industry, to define medium to long-term research and technological development objectives and lay down markers to reach these goals.

European Technology platforms follow a three-stage process of development:

Networking between European ICT Technology Platforms and relevant associations in SEA countries is a key idea of the CONNECT2SEA project. It intends to provide support to those research, development and innovation knowledge networks – such as European Technology Platforms, ICT R&D clusters, networks of excellence and large scale projects - who are seeking to support the internationalization of their ICT R&D activities and can ensure multiplication effect. Through the project’s fund CONNECT2SEA will define a set of pilot actions to help to start exchanges and support sustainable and bottom-up initiatives. These pilot actions which will facilitate access for the EU organisations to the SEA research and innovation programmes, support to the creation of technology platforms in SEA, support to the development of joint funding (similar to a "Pilot ERA-Net"), test of sustainable coordination mechanisms between networks/platforms/clusters will provide valuable feedback to the policy makers, raise awareness and visibility of the ICT strategic partnership, and reduce the gap between policies and implementation.
